Safe drinking water often looks clean and clear, but some of the most common contaminants are invisible. Nitrate and nitrite are two such substances, frequently found in drinking water sources. To help raise public awareness about these hidden risks, Zimmetry Environmental has sponsored a new educational video that explains where nitrate and nitrite come from, why they matter, and how testing plays a key role in protecting health.
Nitrate and nitrite are nitrogen-based compounds that occur naturally in the environment but are commonly introduced into groundwater and surface water through human activity. Agricultural fertilizers, animal waste, septic systems, and wastewater discharges are among the most frequent sources. In certain conditions, nitrate can transform into nitrite, a more chemically reactive compound.
High levels of nitrate and nitrite in drinking water can pose serious health concerns, especially for infants. Nitrate exposure can reduce the blood's ability to carry oxygen, potentially leading to methemoglobinemia, often referred to as “blue baby syndrome.” Pregnant women and individuals with specific health conditions may also face increased risks. Ongoing research is examining potential links between long-term nitrate exposure and thyroid issues or elevated cancer risk.
“To address these concerns, drinking water standards have been established to limit exposure,” said Harry Peña, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set maximum contaminant levels of 10 milligrams per liter for nitrate and 1 milligram per liter for nitrite in public water systems. Private well users are advised to exercise extra caution, as private wells may not be subject to regular testing.”
Zimmetry Environmental assists homeowners, businesses, and organizations across Puerto Rico and the surrounding region with comprehensive drinking water testing for nitrate, nitrite, lead, and other contaminants.
